What is an AIS-140 GPS tracker?

AIS-140 (Automotive Industry Standard 140) is the Indian government standard, framed by ARAI, that mandates vehicle location tracking devices (VLTD) and emergency panic buttons on public transport and commercial vehicles. An AIS-140 GPS tracker is not an ordinary tracker: it must carry type approval from an authorised testing agency, report to state transport backends, support IRNSS/NavIC positioning and drive one or more SOS panic buttons.

Ordinary GPS trackers — however cheap — are rejected at RTO fitment. If your permit, fitness certificate or state mandate requires AIS-140, only a certified VLTD like the GPSBULL AIS-140-4G qualifies.

Who needs an AIS-140 device?

Requirements differ by state (empanelment, backend, fitment centres, activation on the Vahan portal). Tell us your state and vehicle category and we will guide you through the exact process.

RTO fitment and Vahan linkage

Compliance is checked digitally: the device IMEI is registered against your vehicle's registration number on the Vahan portal, the embedded SIM is linked to the vehicle profile, and the device reports to the designated state backend. RTOs verify this linkage when issuing fitness certificates and permits. As the manufacturer, GPSBULL supports the complete chain — supply, fitment guidance, backend configuration and activation.

Frequently asked questions

Is AIS-140 mandatory for my vehicle?

AIS-140 applies to public transport and notified commercial vehicles — buses, school vehicles, taxis and other yellow-plate passenger vehicles, with state transport departments notifying categories and deadlines. Non-compliance can block fitness certificates and permits. Call 1800 123 8677 with your state and vehicle type for a definitive answer.

What is the price of an AIS-140 GPS device?

Pricing depends on your state’s requirements, vehicle category, quantity and the service plan. Beware of cheap non-certified trackers sold as “AIS-140” — they are rejected at RTO fitment. Contact GPSBULL for a direct manufacturer quote.

Does the GPSBULL device support NavIC (IRNSS)?

Yes. The AIS-140-4G positions with GPS, GLONASS and IRNSS (NavIC) as required by the standard, for higher accuracy in the Indian region.

Is the device 4G? What happens as 2G networks shut down?

The GPSBULL AIS-140-4G is a 4G LTE device with a dual-network embedded SIM, so it stays connected as older networks are phased out.

How long does installation take?
