Search for the best GPS tracker for car India and you will find hundreds of listings, but nearly all fall into three families. Pick the family first; brand and model come later.
Wired (hard-wired) tracker
A small box wired to the battery and ignition and hidden under the dashboard. It works on cars, bikes, trucks and tractors, keeps reporting while parked, and can drive an immobiliser relay. It is the default choice for private cars, small fleets and anti-theft. OBD plug-in tracker
Plugs into the OBD-II port under the steering column of most modern cars. AIS-140 certified VLTD
A vehicle location tracking device built to the AIS-140 standard (an Automotive Industry Standard under MoRTH) and type-approved by a recognised testing agency such as ARAI. It must have an emergency-button input, GPS plus IRNSS/NavIC positioning, tamper detection, memory for store-and-forward, and the ability to send data to the state transport backend as well as your own platform. When you legally need an AIS-140 VLTD, not a normal tracker
This is where buyers get burnt. A cheap marketplace tracker will show your taxi on a map, but it will not get your fitness certificate or permit renewed.
The rule in plain terms
Rule 125H of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, inserted by a Ministry of Road Transport & Highways notification in November 2016, requires public service vehicles to be fitted with a vehicle location tracking device and one or more emergency buttons. As notified, it applies to new public service vehicles registered after 1 January 2019, and state or UT governments may notify the compliance date for vehicles registered earlier. Two-wheelers, e-rickshaws, three-wheelers and transport vehicles that need no permit were exempted in the central notification. The device must conform to AIS-140 and be type-approved by a recognised testing agency.
Who this usually covers
- Taxis, cabs and app-based cars on a commercial (yellow-plate) permit
- Stage-carriage and contract-carriage buses, including school and staff buses
- Maxi-cabs, tempo travellers and tourist vehicles
- Separately, as notified by MoRTH in 2022, certain goods vehicles carrying dangerous or hazardous goods must also carry an AIS-140 tracking device
- Some states may extend similar requirements to other categories through their own orders, so check locally
Why your state matters
Enforcement, deadlines, vendor empanelment and backend integration are handled by state transport departments and vary from state to state. Typically the device must be registered and activated against your registration number (through VAHAN and the state VLT backend, as your state directs) before permit or fitness work clears. Before you pay, ask your RTO whether the exact model is on the approved list and whether the vendor must be empanelled locally; a type-approved device that is not on your state's list may be rejected.

4G vs 2G, NavIC and SIM plans
Buy 4G, not 2G
Many low-cost trackers still ship with 2G-only modems. Around the world, and in India too, operators are retiring older 2G and 3G networks in stages to free spectrum for 4G and 5G. A 2G device may work today and go silent later; no firmware update can fix a modem. A 4G LTE tracker is the safe buy for anything you plan to keep three to five years, doubly so for an AIS-140 unit that is registered against your vehicle and not easily swapped.
GPS + GLONASS + NavIC
NavIC (IRNSS) is India's own satellite navigation system. ARAI lists AIS-140 devices as "GPS + IRNSS" systems, so a compliant VLTD must support it. For private trackers it is a bonus rather than a must, but multi-constellation receivers lock on faster and hold position better between tall buildings, under flyovers and in the hills.
SIM and data plan
- Trackers use very little data, so an M2M or IoT SIM plan is usually cheaper than a consumer plan; check the yearly recharge cost and what happens when it lapses.
- Prefer an embedded, dual-network eSIM where offered: it can switch operators automatically on highways and in rural blocks with patchy coverage.
- Look for SMS backup so critical alerts and commands still get through when data drops.

Installation and first-week checks
Wired trackers and VLTDs
Allow roughly 45 to 90 minutes with a trained auto-electrician. The unit should be hidden, powered from a permanent supply with the ignition-sense wire connected so trips start and stop correctly, and any immobiliser relay tested with the vehicle stationary. Do I need an AIS-140 tracker for my private car?
No. CMVR Rule 125H, as notified, applies to public service (permit) vehicles, so a private white-plate car can use any wired or OBD tracker. If the car is used commercially, confirm the requirement with your state transport department or RTO.
Is a 4G GPS tracker worth the extra cost over 2G?
