What is a VLT device?
VLTD stands for Vehicle Location Tracking Device — a government-specified GPS tracking unit that reports a vehicle's position, speed and alerts to state transport department backends in real time. Under AIS-140, VLTDs are mandatory on public transport and notified commercial vehicles across India, together with one or more emergency panic buttons.
A VLTD differs from a consumer GPS tracker in three ways: it is type-approved by an authorised agency (ARAI/ICAT), it communicates with government emergency-response infrastructure, and it is registered against your vehicle on the Vahan portal.
